CLIFTON, Colo. (KKCO) - Mt. Garfield is located between Clifton and Palisade, but the address is listed as Clifton.
The school has around 25 percent minority students, and many of them are learning English as a second language.
The ESL program, or English as a Second Language program, gives these students a class designed to accelerate their education in the English Language Arts. ESL teacher Lauren Dominguez tells her students to write their lessons in English, then they stand up and talk about their work with each other in small groups.
She says, "We have to make sure that we have speaking writing in every lesson and that was a speaking activity and that was a prompt some of them wouldn't know how to start a conversation without it." Dominguez says her students respond well to situations in which they can participate with their friends.
Mt. Garfield also opens it's classroom to after-school programs like childcare, archery, and cupcake-making.
Currently, there are 12 students taking advanced Childcare classes, offered by the Red Cross. They are learning CPR and other life-saving techniques. When they are done, these students will be licensed childcare providers.
