MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) - Mesa County Elections workers have been working hard to get Voter Identification Cards out to residents by caucus time.

The caucus is the grassroots level of political involvement, where candidates are nominated, and political careers begin.

Every two years, each precinct in Mesa County holds it's own caucus.
Ruth Ehlers, Chair of the Mesa County Republican Party says, "These are the neighbors getting together, and they're choosing somebody from their neighborhood who'se going to represent them."

Caucus participants elect delegates to the county, state, and House District conventions. At those conventions, delegates choose the people who will go on the primary ballot.

Mesa County Elections Director Catherine Lenhart says, "Due to re-precincting, every voter in Mesa County has a new precinct number. We had 82 precincts in the county and now we have 57."

Redistricting means most voters in Mesa County have new precincts. "Because a precinct cannot cross a House District line, we had to re-precinct most of the county as well."
