GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - There are the traditional Mother’s Day gifts, from breakfast in bed to jewelry to flowers.

“Um, Mother's Day, what is nice about it is it's spring time and our inventory is a little broader. We do a lot of patio pots, hanging baskets and so on," said Richard Emerson of
Johnson's House of Flowers.

And then there’s the traditional tattoo.

"If I were to get one for my mom, I'd get a hummingbird over getting a word. And that's much more common now a days I'd say than getting a mom in a heart. Or I love mom," said Jeremy Ries, a tattoo artist at Black Pearl Tattoo.

Jeff Hone and Robert Dolan have tattoos dedicated to their mothers that have both passed away due to cancer.

“She passed away Jan. 21st, after a long battle with, with breast cancer. I didn't know what else to do, or, you know, to show my appreciation, you know, for her," said Dolan.

Hone had a set of dog tags made after his mother died. She fought cancer for seven years, and he carries the tags with him whenever he’s at a special event.

When I got married, I, I wore the dog tags with me. Um, so that she was with me when I got married. So, this way I've always got 'em," said Hone.

As the artwork has changed, the idea hasn’t. It’s just another way to say how much mom means. Arlo Dicristina, a tattoo artist at The Raw Canvas in downtown Grand Junction has convinced his mom her first tattoo. And plans on getting a mom tattoo of his own.

“Nothing shows your mom more love than a tattoo," said Dicristina.
