GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - There's no doubt to the popularity of bicycling here in the Grand Valley. And it's not simply restricted to hobbyist. People are taking to two wheels for a variety of reasons.

For exercise, fun, or convenience, the number of people riding is bound to increase regardless of the time of day. It’s during the times of day when the sun isn’t up that people are more vulnerable on the road.

"Civil twilight. Uh, basically when cars really don't have their lights on yet. But it's dark enough it's starting to impair vision somewhat. That's actually probably the most dangerous time to be on the road," said Mark Wingerter, manager of Summit Canyon Mountaineering.

An early morning jogger or cyclist can wear a reflective vest, some of which are lined with LEDs.

“You throw the vest on, it's simple. You can pack it up in your pocket when you don't need it,” said Wingerter.

Led lights, whether worn or mounted to a bicycle frame are an inexpensive and easy way to be seen.

"They’re inexpensive, easily attached to any bicycle. One will go on you seat post one on the handlebar," said Ryan Cranston, the owner of Ruby Canyon Cycles.

These lights can blink or be a solid beam. They won't produce a lot of light to see with, but will allow a cyclist to be seen. They’re also required for riding at night.

"It's a very small led bulb on there. But when it's dark, those things are super bright very, very, visible. Reflectivity is the best thing you can do. But bright colors like ion yellow, um, bright neon orange, things like that, are going to add visibility as well," said Cranston.

If the usual bright colored clothing isn’t appeasing, there is clothing that is both reflective and casual.

"So you can wear it to the office, uh, wear it, you know, out with your friends for dinner. Or what ever," said Wingerter.

The idea is to combine reflective items with other lighting. It can be the traditional spoke reflector or a neon band, as long other people can see you from all directions.

"Really, the more the merrier. The more you can get on there the more bright you're going to be the better it's going to illuminate you at night. And that's ultimately going to keep you safer," said Wingerter.
