Christmas Concert

Date(s): 12/23/2011

11:00 a.m.

Landmark Baptist Church, 2711 Unaweep Avenue, Grand Junction
Landmark Baptist Church will present the cantata From Christmas to Calvary by Glenn and Jan Christianson on Friday, December 23 at 7:00 p.m. and again on Sunday, December 25 at 11:00 a.m.

In this story Hank, who is old and cantankerous and is bitter toward God and the church, learns the true meaning of Christmas—that Jesus came to earth with the sole reason of dying on the cross for our sins. Some of the choir goes caroling at Hank’s home, where he lives with his daughter and her family, and they have a great effect on Hank. Hank is able to soften his heart and overcome his bitterness enough to trust the Lord as his Saviour. Hank finds a reason for living.

The event will be held at Landmark Baptist Church located at 2711 Unaweep Avenue in Grand Junction. There is no cost and nursery is provided. Call 970-257-1047 for further information.

"The Language of This Land" Writers' Conference

Date(s): 10/7/2011

12:00pm

800 Colorado
"The Language of This Land" to be held Oct. 7-9 in Grand Junction.

Legendary Native American author Leslie Marmon Silko, who rarely appears in public, and has authored many novels, including Ceremony, an American classic, will read Oct. 8th from her newest book, The Turquoise Ledge, at a downtown G.J. banquet. Her appearance is part of an inaugural writers' conference, "The Language of This Land," held by the Western Colorado Writers' Forum.
Ten other authors will read and teach over the weekend-long conference, including Colorado Poet Laureate David Mason, novelist Will Hobbs, Telluride poet & journalist Art Goodtimes, award-winning Colorado novelist Laura Hendrie, and several well-known Colorado poets, including G.J.'s Luis Lopez and Wendy Videlock, and Janice Gould, of Colorado Springs.
Most of the conference workshops and the banquet will be held downtown, with two other workshops to be held at Colorado Mesa University and one at the Colorado National Monument.
Two Front Range editors, Pilgrimage editor Maria Melendez and The Nervous Breakdown's Uche Ogbuchi, will teach a workshop for writers on submissions and online promotion. Melendez will also offer manuscript critiques and individual sessions with writers.
Three free workshops open to the public, limited to 30, will be offered. The downtown public library will host one class in poetry, and one in journalism, taught by Videlock and Goodtimes. David Mason will team up with a naturalist from the Colorado National Monument for a Saturday morning of hiking, learning geology and flora and fauna, and writing.
Ute elder Clifford Duncan, of Utah, will speak at the banquet, together with Mason and Silko, and also speak at the final event, a community breakfast open to the public downtown at 800 Colorado the morning of Sunday, Oct. 9. The two-hour breakfast will feature storytelling and readings by visiting writers and Ute, Basque, Hispanic, Greek, African-American, Anglo and other speakers on their origins in this region.

Main Street Design Open House

5:00 pm to 8:30 pm

6th & Main Street Downtown Grand Junction
A proposed design for the new look of Main Street has been approved by the DDA Board of Directors and City Council. This is a conceptual design for the four blocks of Main Street between 3rd and 7th Streets. A public open house will be held Thursday during the Farmers' Market on Main Street. All comments on the proposed design are welcome and encouraged.
As part of the public process for The Downtown Uplift project, this is the second public open house. The proposed design has emerged from Main Street merchant and general community feedback as well as technical evaluation. The Downtown Uplift is funded primarily by the Downtown Development Authority and is a Downtown Partnership project.
The design calls for basic improvements to the infrastructure, a concrete surface, tree replacement and increased pedestrian space and amenities in all four blocks. In addition, the 400 block design shows a dramatic increase in pedestrian space and amenities with no on-street parking. Traffic flow and drop-off ears are preserved in all blocks. Additional mparking spaces may be gained on side streets and the breezeway to the parking garage in the 400 block will aid accessibility to Main Street businesses.
The proposed design can be seen after July 9 on the Downtown Partnership Web site, www.downtowngj.org.
