Polar Plunge Fundraiser for Neural Activity

Date(s): 2/21/2015

10 a.m.

Highline Lake State Park in Loma
Dive into teen drug prevention with the first ever Neural Activity Polar Plunge Fundraiser!
Mesa County’s teen drug prevention program, Neural Activity, is hosting a cool fundraising event later this month. The group’s first ever Polar Plunge will be Saturday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at Highline Lake State Park.

While there’s no ice on the lake, participants can still be Subzero Superheroes by participating in the fundraiser. Registration is $19 per person, or $15 per person for teams of 4 or more people. All money raised stays in the Grand Valley to help area teens in their mission to end substance abuse by their peers. Participants can register online at www.neuralactivity.org. Team challenges and superhero costumes are encouraged and welcome! Participants are asked to bring a change of clothing and a towel. Hot showers and warming tents will be available after they plunge into the lake.

The teens are also selling hot beverages and refreshments for those brave enough to jump in. Teens in the program believe it shouldn’t cost anything to be drug free, so they hold fundraisers throughout the year in order to make participation in the program free to their peers.

Neural Activity is a teen drug prevention program for teens, by teens. Teens in the program believe they can end teen drug use by reaching out to younger teens with a dynamic, peer-led drug prevention message. The non-profit program marries adventure activities with a drug prevention curriculum, focused on leadership development and confidence building, to create a life-changing outreach program. That program develops teen leaders and mentors, as well as reaches out to teens dealing with substance abuse problems. The adventure activities teach teens powerful socio-emotional skills, as well as how the body naturally rewards hard work and how drugs hijack and ultimately corrupt those very same pathways in the brain.

The program started in Mesa County in 2013 with just eight students. It wrapped up the last school year with 18. The 2014-15 school year has interest/participation from 200 students across the Valley. It is open to any high school student and clubs exist at CHS, FMHS, GJHS, Grande River Virtual Academy, and PHS. To join Neural Activity, provide support, or volunteer, please contact Leigh Fitch at 970-260-7002.

The Western Colorado Center for the Arts is to show Henry and Angela Hites Amish Quilt Collection this year. Previously The Art Center has shown The Hite's collection of Hawaiian and Maryland Appliqué . The Hites are dedicated and passionate quilt collectors who do an impressively thorough job archiving and preserving significant quilt collections. The Amish quilts, with their diverse range of patterns and colors, are especially inventive. Some date as far back as the nineteenth century, while still others are contemporary. Quilting is a lesson in patience, and each quilt speaks to its maker's personality.

US Postal Service Poised to Make Devastating Cuts in Service:
Western Colorado Postal Workers to Deliver Message – ‘Stop Delaying America’s Mail’ – Through Protests Here, in Washington and Around the Nation

WHO: Local postal workers

WHAT: Protest against mail processing center closings and mail delays

WHERE: 602 Burkey St (Foresight Circle)

WHEN: 2-5 PM Friday, November 14

DATELINE [Grand Junction] -- Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe and the USPS Board of Governors, the board that oversees the U.S. Postal Service, are poised to make devastating cuts in service to the American people – cuts so severe that they would forever damage the U.S. Postal Service.

• On Jan. 5, the USPS is slated to lower “service standards” to virtually eliminate overnight delivery – including first-class mail from one address to another within the same city or town.
• All mail (medicine, online purchases, local newspapers, newsletters of religious organizations, bill payments, letters and invitations) throughout the country would be delayed.
• Our entire community would lose business opportunities associated with ecommerce, which relies on the speedy delivery of goods ordered online.
• Beginning Jan. 5, 82 Mail Processing & Distribution Centers are scheduled to close.

On Nov. 14 postal workers in Western Colorado will protest at Foresight Circle at 3:00 pm as part of a National Day of Action to send a message to Postmaster General and the USPS Board of Governors: Stop Delaying America’s Mail!

The cuts would cause hardships for the public and small businesses, eliminate jobs, and destroy the world’s most efficient and affordable delivery network by driving away mail and revenue. They are part of the same flawed strategy that’s behind efforts to end Saturday and door-to-door deliveries, cut back post office hours, and make other reductions in mail service.

The travesty is that the cuts are absolutely unnecessary – because postal operations are profitable. The Postal Service, which isn’t funded by taxpayers, has earned an operating profit so far this year of more than $1 billion. For four years running, its finances have been improving.
And, while revenue from First Class Mail has been declining, package delivery, largely due to the growth of e-commerce has been rapidly expanding.

There is red ink, but it stems from political interference, not from the mail. In 2006, a lame-duck Congress mandated that the Postal Service pre-fund future retiree health benefits 75 years in advance – something no other public agency or private firm is required to do. That costs the Postal Service $5.6 billion a year – and that’s the red ink.

Fifty-one senators and 160 House members have called for a one-year moratorium on the reduction in service and the closure of the mail processing centers to allow Congress time to enact postal legislation that would improve, not degrade, postal service. The Postmaster General and USPS Board of Governors should honor their request.

Playing With Your Expectations: Western Slope Avant Garde

Date(s): 9/5/2014

1803 North 7th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81501
Playing with Your Expectations highlights the work of artists who have challenged the norms of material use, assigned value or commodity, expendability, subject matter and content. The Art Center hopes to create critical dialogue with every curated exhibit, but this exhibit brings some of our most experimental artists to the forefront.

The Western Slope and Moab are lucky to have had all these creatives with us no matter how brief a moment in time. They have been and continue to be some of the bravest people and the most generous in spirit our community has come to know.

Western Slope artists selected are: Jamie Bardsley, Grand Junction; Verona Burkhardt, Grand Junction; John Cohorst, Carbondale; Paul Collins, Snowmass (now Nashville, TN); Gary Haushulz, Palisade; Karly Koster, Grand Junction (currently Austin, TX); Lancer Livermont, Grand Junction; Charmaine Locke, Carbondale; Sara Ransford, Aspen/Loma; Paul Soldner, Aspen; James Surls, Carbondale; Toru Sugita, Grand Junction (now San Francisco CA); and Bryan Wade, Grand Junction.

Close neighbor, Adele Alsop, from Moab, is also included. Her work is so utterly breath-taking. Proximity and quality of work make Adele a natural fit for this exhibit.

Western Colorado Bonsai Society

Date(s): 9/5/2014

1803 North 7th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81501
Bonsai is a fascinating horticultural art form, deeply rooted in history over centuries from its early incarnation as penjing in China to what is seen now as the formal Japanese bonsai. The trees come in many forms and colors from the tiny pink leaves of a delicate maple to the rugged gray bark of an old collected pine. The pots act not only as a container but also as an aesthetic extension of the tree, and stands are chosen to enhance the view of the composition as a whole.

Bonsai require great care; it is a huge responsibility to care for these sometimes very old trees. They become a part of and have a history with their caretakers and some are said, in folk tales, to possess a spirit. As much work as it can be, the reward of experiencing the ever-changing landscape which is a bonsai pays back tenfold.

The Western Colorado Bonsai Society meets every month with exciting demonstrations, styling classes, visiting experts, and great company.

Christmas Concert

Date(s): 12/23/2011

11:00 a.m.

Landmark Baptist Church, 2711 Unaweep Avenue, Grand Junction
Landmark Baptist Church will present the cantata From Christmas to Calvary by Glenn and Jan Christianson on Friday, December 23 at 7:00 p.m. and again on Sunday, December 25 at 11:00 a.m.

In this story Hank, who is old and cantankerous and is bitter toward God and the church, learns the true meaning of Christmas—that Jesus came to earth with the sole reason of dying on the cross for our sins. Some of the choir goes caroling at Hank’s home, where he lives with his daughter and her family, and they have a great effect on Hank. Hank is able to soften his heart and overcome his bitterness enough to trust the Lord as his Saviour. Hank finds a reason for living.

The event will be held at Landmark Baptist Church located at 2711 Unaweep Avenue in Grand Junction. There is no cost and nursery is provided. Call 970-257-1047 for further information.

Main Street Design Open House

5:00 pm to 8:30 pm

6th & Main Street Downtown Grand Junction
A proposed design for the new look of Main Street has been approved by the DDA Board of Directors and City Council. This is a conceptual design for the four blocks of Main Street between 3rd and 7th Streets. A public open house will be held Thursday during the Farmers' Market on Main Street. All comments on the proposed design are welcome and encouraged.
As part of the public process for The Downtown Uplift project, this is the second public open house. The proposed design has emerged from Main Street merchant and general community feedback as well as technical evaluation. The Downtown Uplift is funded primarily by the Downtown Development Authority and is a Downtown Partnership project.
The design calls for basic improvements to the infrastructure, a concrete surface, tree replacement and increased pedestrian space and amenities in all four blocks. In addition, the 400 block design shows a dramatic increase in pedestrian space and amenities with no on-street parking. Traffic flow and drop-off ears are preserved in all blocks. Additional mparking spaces may be gained on side streets and the breezeway to the parking garage in the 400 block will aid accessibility to Main Street businesses.
The proposed design can be seen after July 9 on the Downtown Partnership Web site, www.downtowngj.org.
