Playing With Your Expectations: Western Slope Avant Garde

7-9pm

1803 North 7th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81501
Playing with Your Expectations highlights the work of artists who have challenged the norms of material use, assigned value or commodity, expendability, subject matter and content. The Art Center hopes to create critical dialogue with every curated exhibit, but this exhibit brings some of our most experimental artists to the forefront.

The Western Slope and Moab are lucky to have had all these creatives with us no matter how brief a moment in time. They have been and continue to be some of the bravest people and the most generous in spirit our community has come to know.

Western Slope artists selected are: Jamie Bardsley, Grand Junction; Verona Burkhardt, Grand Junction; John Cohorst, Carbondale; Paul Collins, Snowmass (now Nashville, TN); Gary Haushulz, Palisade; Karly Koster, Grand Junction (currently Austin, TX); Lancer Livermont, Grand Junction; Charmaine Locke, Carbondale; Sara Ransford, Aspen/Loma; Paul Soldner, Aspen; James Surls, Carbondale; Toru Sugita, Grand Junction (now San Francisco CA); and Bryan Wade, Grand Junction.

Close neighbor, Adele Alsop, from Moab, is also included. Her work is so utterly breath-taking. Proximity and quality of work make Adele a natural fit for this exhibit.

Western Colorado Bonsai Society

7-9pm

1803 North 7th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81501
Bonsai is a fascinating horticultural art form, deeply rooted in history over centuries from its early incarnation as penjing in China to what is seen now as the formal Japanese bonsai. The trees come in many forms and colors from the tiny pink leaves of a delicate maple to the rugged gray bark of an old collected pine. The pots act not only as a container but also as an aesthetic extension of the tree, and stands are chosen to enhance the view of the composition as a whole.

Bonsai require great care; it is a huge responsibility to care for these sometimes very old trees. They become a part of and have a history with their caretakers and some are said, in folk tales, to possess a spirit. As much work as it can be, the reward of experiencing the ever-changing landscape which is a bonsai pays back tenfold.

The Western Colorado Bonsai Society meets every month with exciting demonstrations, styling classes, visiting experts, and great company.
