Polar Plunge Fundraiser for Neural Activity
Highline Lake State Park in Loma
Dive into teen drug prevention with the first ever Neural Activity Polar Plunge Fundraiser!
Mesa County’s teen drug prevention program, Neural Activity, is hosting a cool fundraising event later this month. The group’s first ever Polar Plunge will be Saturday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at Highline Lake State Park.
While there’s no ice on the lake, participants can still be Subzero Superheroes by participating in the fundraiser. Registration is $19 per person, or $15 per person for teams of 4 or more people. All money raised stays in the Grand Valley to help area teens in their mission to end substance abuse by their peers. Participants can register online at www.neuralactivity.org. Team challenges and superhero costumes are encouraged and welcome! Participants are asked to bring a change of clothing and a towel. Hot showers and warming tents will be available after they plunge into the lake.
The teens are also selling hot beverages and refreshments for those brave enough to jump in. Teens in the program believe it shouldn’t cost anything to be drug free, so they hold fundraisers throughout the year in order to make participation in the program free to their peers.
Neural Activity is a teen drug prevention program for teens, by teens. Teens in the program believe they can end teen drug use by reaching out to younger teens with a dynamic, peer-led drug prevention message. The non-profit program marries adventure activities with a drug prevention curriculum, focused on leadership development and confidence building, to create a life-changing outreach program. That program develops teen leaders and mentors, as well as reaches out to teens dealing with substance abuse problems. The adventure activities teach teens powerful socio-emotional skills, as well as how the body naturally rewards hard work and how drugs hijack and ultimately corrupt those very same pathways in the brain.
The program started in Mesa County in 2013 with just eight students. It wrapped up the last school year with 18. The 2014-15 school year has interest/participation from 200 students across the Valley. It is open to any high school student and clubs exist at CHS, FMHS, GJHS, Grande River Virtual Academy, and PHS. To join Neural Activity, provide support, or volunteer, please contact Leigh Fitch at 970-260-7002.
