The Century Council - Drunk Driving & Underage Drinking in the News
  • Police: Alcohol a factor in Plainfield youth's accident

The Vermont State Police have determined that underage drinking played a role in the car crash that killed 17-year-old Caidin McKeever last June in Plainfield, but the role of a tractor trailer truck that was on the road at the same time may remain a mystery.

Police suspected that McKeever was drinking before he got behind the wheel of his car and drove east on Route 2 with four passengers. And a toxicology report performed as part of the investigation has confirmed that initial conclusion, police said, showing McKeever's blood-alcohol level to be .08 percent, which is the legal limit for an adult.

The crash took place at about 2 a.m. on June 23. Before the accident, McKeever was at a gathering at the Plainfield Rec Field and then went to a private residence, police said. McKeever was driving someone home when his eastbound Honda Civic veered off the right side of the road into a tree, said police.

  • Man out on probation for DUI fatality arrested again

Thomas Tester spent nearly seven years behind bars for a drunken-driving crash in 2000 that killed his passenger and led to serious injuries to two people who tried to help the victim and suffered electrical shocks.

Now, he's back in custody, after being charged in Maine with drunken driving, his fifth such offense.

It's an arrest that the mother of his victim once predicted would happen.

  • Mahopac mom gets 3 years probation for DWI

A Mahopac mother who was charged with driving while intoxicated during the summer after veering off the road while driving her daughter and four friends home from the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department Fair has been sentenced to three years of probation, a court clerk said today.

Susan Rogge, 46, received the sentence Tuesday in Carmel Town Court on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. She was also ordered to pay fines and court costs.

Rogge lost control of her Hyundai on Stillwater Road in July while driving her daughter and the girl’s friends home from the fair. Her 13-year-old daughter called police to report that her mother was drunk and had driven off the road.

  • State Police charge Lakeview Terrace man with DWI, first offense, this morning

Louisiana State Police early Thursday charged Stephen N. Vinson, 21, 204 Lakeview Terrace, with driving while intoxicated, first offense, improper lane usage and window tinting.

Bond was set at a total of $800 at Ouachita Correctional Center.

An arrest affidavit said Troopers saw Vinson's eastbound vehicle twice cross the center line on Old Sterlington Road east of U.S. 165.

  • Caterer charged with DUI; police deliver lunch

    Talk about fast food.

Police delivered a catered lunch order after the caterer who was trying to make the delivery was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence.

Willie D. Meekins, 32, of Fort Washington, tested at four times the legal blood alcohol content for driving, which is 0.08, according to Maryland State Police.

  • Bryan man faces fourth DWI charge

A 36-year-old Bryan man with three convictions for driving while intoxicated was arrested on his fourth DWI charge after he was involved in a traffic accident, authorities said.

College Station police responded just before 10 a.m. Tuesday to the accident on University Drive and found Christopher Todd Prewitt sitting in a vehicle that had minor front-end damage near a car with substantial rear-end damage, according to the police report.

Officers said they could smell alcohol on Prewitt's breath. He completed some of the standard field sobriety tests but refused to do the one-leg stand and was arrested, according to the police report.

  • West Monroe man convicted of 4th DWI

A West Monroe man faces the possibility of serving up to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday to two counts of driving while intoxicated, fourth offense.

William D. Hobbs, 46, pleaded guilty before Judge Carl Sharp and will be sentenced Dec. 14.

"Multiple offense drunk drivers are some of the most dangerous criminals in the state today," District Attorney Jerry Jones said. "A family is much more likely to be hurt by a drunk driver than a career violent criminal."

  • Teen admits her guilt in fatal DWI

A North Tonawanda teenager admitted Wednesday that she was driving drunk when she crashed her car and killed her boyfriend on May 31.

Ashley M. Sullivan, 17, of Linden Avenue, pleaded guilty in Niagara County Court to criminally negligent homicide and a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated.

Sullivan could receive 1x to four years in state prison at sentencing Jan. 27.

  • Jury deciding alleged DUI death

Daniel Smith's blood alcohol level was .082 - just barely over the legal limit - when he crashed into another car.

Jurors began deliberating Wednesday in the case of a Bristol Township man accused of driving drunk and killing a 75-year-old woman.

Daniel Smith, 43, is standing trial in Bucks County court in Doylestown on vehicular homicide and involuntary manslaughter charges.

  • Cops say alcohol played role in Vt. teen's death

The Vermont State Police says that underage drinking played a role in a June traffic crash that killed a Montpelier teenager.

Police say tests showed that 17-year-old Caidin McKeever had a blood alcohol content of .08 at the time of the June 23 crash.
