GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Monsoon showers are back in the forecast this week and Monday looks to be the wettest and coolest day this week as showers and thunderstorms will plague the Western Slope. Don't worry, things are looking dryer for Tuesday.

The satellite shows the short-term expectations with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing over northeast Utah associated with a shortwave trough lifting out of the Great Basin.

Over southeast Utah, a large outflow boundary is spreading thunderstorms toward the northwest. On the larger scale, the forecast model shows the main ridgeline over the Colorado/Utah border at present and the models show the main ridgeline passing east of the area by the end of the day.

The convection breaking out early Monday morning appears to be along and west of this ridgeline. After the weak shortwave passes, the flow aloft will shift more to the west north west. We’ll see an increased chance of rain today and this evening for just about everywhere. With all the cloud cover today expect temps to be five or more degrees cooler. Max temps should rebound Tuesday.

A dry slot pushes into the area late Monday and Tuesday affecting central and northwest Colorado and northeast Utah the most. Tuesday and Tuesday night should be significantly drier with isolated thunderstorms mainly over the northern mountains.

Models are inconsistent on the details during the extended period resulting in relatively low confidence in trends. Therefore, expect little change in general pattern with periodic pacific shortwaves brushing our forecast area and generating dynamic lift.

Significant drying not expected for any appreciable period of time during the extended period with just fluctuating precipitable water values. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the week for the mountains with a slight chance of showers for lower elevations.

Temperatures will be dependent on cloud cover and showers as airmass not likely to change much. Temperatures on Wednesday will be slightly lower than previous forecasted due to expected increase of clouds and thunderstorms. The chance of rain will decrease into Friday. Models have things clearing out by the weekend with temperatures topping out in the lower 90s
