Trenton, N.J. (AP) After bringing March snow to unlikely places like Alabama this weekend, a massive winter storm has moved northeast, blanketing states from North Carolina to New England. A foot or more of snow is expected in many places.

Motorists have been dealing with treacherous conditions during morning rush hour. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and gusting winds have contributed to at least four deaths on roads in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York.

It's shutting down air travel too. Hundreds of flights have been canceled at the three major New York area airports and Boston's Logan.

Meanwhile farther south, hundreds of thousands of customers are without power in the Carolinas and Virginia.

Schools are closed throughout the region.

With places as far south as South Carolina reporting 8 inches of snow on the ground by daybreak, forecasters are warning that the snow may stop for a few hours, but is likely to start up again.
