GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The National Weather Service in Grand Junction has issued a winter storm warning for snow which is in effect from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A strong winter storm will sweep over the region bringing widespread snow, possibly heavy at times, to much of western Colorado and southeast Utah beginning Monday morning and continuing through Tuesday.

The lower valleys of western Colorado and eastern Utah may see rain or a rain-snow mix Monday afternoon with light accumulations by Monday evening. The heaviest snow will likely occur Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Snowfall accumulations ranging from four to eigh inches are possible by late Tuesday afternoon. Some areas could see as much as one foot of new snow. A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow are expected or occurring. Strong winds and blowing snow are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

There is a blizzard warning for the the cities of Skyway, Ridgway, Glade Park, Ouray, Telluride, Lake City, Silverton, Rico, Hesperus, Monticello and vicinity. The blizzard warning remains in effect from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Southwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph will result in periods of white-out conditions in blowing snow mainly late Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night.

By Tuesday evening 16 to 30 inches of new snow is expected with favored southwest facing slopes receiving accumulations of up to three feet. Significant drifting will occur. A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Widespread falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded stay with your vehicle.
