DENVER (AP) - Colorado lawmakers have declared a snow day and are taking the day off.
House Speaker Terrance Carroll, a Democrat from Denver, and Senate President Brandon Shaffer, a Democrat from Longmont, canceled their sessions and committee meetings on Wednesday.
Staffers were calling members to make sure that everyone received the message.
Gov. Bill Ritter's office was opening an hour late because of the weather, and other state agencies also weren't opening until 10 a.m.
The National Weather Service said 23 inches of snow was reported Wednesday morning in Jefferson County and about 9 inches in Denver.
