GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A new study reveals the top three insurance claims for property damage here in Grand Junction. The number one culprit, the weather.
It's something you can't even see but it can be really powerful. It's the wind and sometimes it can cause some pretty serious damage.
According to a review by Allstate Insurance Company the top three claims in the Grand Valley were wind, water damage and theft.
"The two most common claims for wind are fences being blown down and damage to roofs," says Allstate Agent Robin Dujay.
Experts suggest that homeowners check shingles on their roofs to make sure they're securely fastened and walk the perimeter of their fence, checking the boards and posts. They also recommend trimming tree branches that can knock shingles off the house.
The second most claims come from water damage, but not from floods. "Washing machine, dishwashers, water heaters and toilets malfunctioning are the big things," says Dujay. Experts suggest checking your policy to see what's covered because not all leaks are the same. "If a pipe breaks outside the house it's usually not covered, if it breaks inside the house it's covered," says Dujay.
Springtime is the start of the severe weather season on the Western Slope and experts say now is the perfect time for homeowners to inspect their homes for any minor damage or wear that may have occurred during the winter months and make the proper repairs before severe weather strikes.
The last is theft. Simple things like closing your garage door can deter thieves from striking, even if it's only open few minutes.
