GJPD helps organize “Cops and Barbers” event on Main Street
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The Grand Junction Police Department helped host an event this afternoon where community members could meet with officers.
Cops and Barbers was held at Bejarano’s Barbershop on Main Street. We are told some GJPD officers regularly get their hair cut at Bejarano’s, and the owner wanted to give them a platform to speak with community members.
Both Police Chief Doug Shoemaker and owner Chris Bejarano agree that barbershops are a perfect setting for meaningful conversation.
“It’s a place you can talk and be yourself, and get to meet great people,” says Chief Shoemaker. “I think that level of comfort makes a big difference.”
Bejarano added, “We’re trying to get as many people as we can down here, so we can have good discussion. The more diverse opinions we have, the more communicating we can actually get done.”
Deputy Chief Matt Smith and Commander Bill Baker both joined Chief Shoemaker in meeting with people at Cops and Barbers.
Chris Bejarano says he will try to hold similar events at his barbershop in the near future. The officers agreed that these events are an important tool to help maintain a good relationship between the police department and the community they serve.
