Grand Valley Oncology announces start of clinical trials

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Community Hospital is upgrading its oncology department, hoping to help more people with a new service. Grand Valley Oncology is teaming up with Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah to offer a variety of clinical trials for patients.

Huntsman works with multiple hospitals in the West, but Community Hospital will be the first to offer clinical trials.

The department started about two years ago, and the goal is to keep patients local.

“We wanted to make sure we had a cancer center here for our community, and this is the next evolution of Grand Valley Oncology. This is bringing clinical trials so folks don't have to leave the community," said Chris Thomas, CEO of Community Hospital. "This is us continuing to advance healthcare in the Grand Valley,"

They are going to start with one or two trials, and expand over time.

“To grow in such a way we incorporate clinical trials in every area of cancer care,” said Dr. Daniel Couriel, with Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Participation in trials is 100 percent voluntary and patients can withdraw at any time.
