Blood drive honors injured doctor

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- There’s always an increased need for blood in the summer. However, Friday’s blood drive at Community Hospital held extra importance for staff there.

More than 100 people donated for Dr. Kennan Vance and his recovery.

Dr. Vance was in a serious bicycle accident in April. After eight days in a coma, four surgeries, and months of physical therapy, he got the okay to walk this week.

With Friday being his birthday, the hospital thought it was the perfect time to have a blood drive.

“I'm certainly overwhelmed by the support; there's been a lot more people than we anticipated. They had to go back and get more bags for blood because they ran out,” said Dr. Vance.

Dr. Vance is an orthopedic surgeon so he knows firsthand how important blood donations are. He said he still loves to bike and cycle and he’ll be back on his wheels as soon as he can.
