GATEWAY, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A man faces attempted murder charges after a shooting incident in Western Colorado.
The sheriff's office said Rick Whited, of Arizona, was arrested Sunday after he was reportedly shooting at cars driving on Highway 141 in Gateway.
He faces 5 counts of attempted first-degree murder and 6 counts of felony menacing, according to the sheriff's office.
The incident crippled traffic through Gateway, and caused the whole community to be on alert.
Around 4:15 p.m., the sheriff's office said authorities from several agencies were called to an area near the Gateway Canyons General Store, where Whited, 54, was reportedly shooting at cars driving by,
Gateway Canyons security responded first, according to the sheriff's office. That's when shots were reportedly fired between Whited and security officers. They pinned him down until authorities from several surrounding agencies got on scene to help arrest him.
The sheriff's office said no one was shot, though Whited did have minor injuries. No one else was hurt. At least one car was damaged.
Homes and business in the area were told to shelter in place during the situation, and traffic was blocked for some time. Traffic has since reopened and the shelter-in-place was lifted.
Whited was taken to the Mesa County Jail.
All documents have been sealed by the courts, and the case is still under investigation. No mugshots have been released at this point.
