GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- There's a new scam targeting residents in Western Colorado.
The Garfield County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday said the scam artist tries to convince people that he or she is in a contest to win a scholarship for college. They will reportedly name a college in the area that's recognizable.
They claim the contest involves raising money for military troops. They'll ask for credit card information, personal contact details or even cash, but don't be fooled. It's false.
Garfield County deputies said to ask for contact information if you think they're legitimate. But when you call, don't use any number or email the perpetrator gives you, because it could be a spoofed contact that leads you into their scam. Contact the college independently and see if it's a legitimate program.
"Be aware of this and other similar scams and be prepared to turn the tables on the perpetrator by getting their name and information," the sheriff's office said.
