Local students give back for the holiday

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Students at Scenic Elementary School are learning the true meaning of the holidays.

Instead of thinking about what they want to receive, they are thinking about what to give. It’s part of a first-time Giving Fair.

The PTO picked charities across the Grand Valley. Students talked about it with their parents and made a donation to the charity along with a card for the holidays.

“It opened up conversations at home that maybe they wouldn't have had otherwise. About giving, and organizations, maybe people less fortunate about them,” said Erica Ridgley with the PTO.

The charity they picked and the donation amount was all up to the kids.

"I was donating money to a place called 'The House," said third-grader Bryce Campbell. "They told me that it was one of the best places to donate to, so teenagers could get off the streets."

Not only did students get to learn about helping others, but they also learned the value of a dollar. It showed them how a little bit can go a long way.
