Grand Junction Man Raising Funds for HomewardBound

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Ellis Hovey's birthday is in two days but he isn't asking for gifts this year.

Hovey was homeless for seven years, so instead, he is asking for help in supporting HomewardBound -- a place close to his heart.

“I was homeless for 7 years and I will never forget the people that I left behind,” said Hovey. “It was HomewardBound that helped me.”

So far he's raised $241 but hopes to raise $1,000 by his birthday.

“If it hadn’t been for HomewardBound I wouldn’t be alive right now,” said Hovey. “I was about ready to check out of the hotel.”

Hovey started his fundraiser at $10,000 and lowered his goal to $1,000 – hoping it would be more realistic.

Hovey is one of many choosing to start birthday fundraisers. This is a new feature that Facebook rolled out earlier this year.

”What I want to stress is I’m not the only person who can do this – everyone can do this.”
