Lower Valley FD pushes for mill levy increase for upgrades

FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- The Lower Valley Fire Department is hoping voters will approve a 3 mill levy increase on the upcoming ballot.

They say the extra money would help with upgrades they need.

"Since 2004-2017 we've had a 74-percent increase in call volume and we're seeing lots of back to back, second and third calls," Chief Frank Cavaliere said.

The department's ladder truck is 34 years old and their brush trucks are more than 18 years old.

They say the money will help replace ambulances, update stations like the Loma station which is not up to code. They also plan to hire more full-time firefighters.

"The maintenance costs are starting to outrun the life of the apparatus," Cavaliere said. "So what we're trying to do is just make sure we're not throwing good dollars to bad."
