Parachute earthquake felt across Western Slope

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The earthquake near Parachute could be felt all across the Western Slope early Friday morning. Many of you got in touch with us to share your experiences.

Jaelith Cordova said in part: "In Fruita, it woke me up out of my sleep. A little scary. First one I’ve ever felt."

Abigial Ortega said "nice to know it wasn't a ghost moving my bed... Either way, I was scared."

Robin Smith wrote "house shaking, dresser drawer knobs clanking. One advantage to not sleeping is I didn't miss the experience."

Marilyn Smith said, "woke up my 8-month-old granddaughter."

Even though Grand Junction is almost 50 miles from the epicenter, people say the movement woke them up and some people even had things move around their house.

“My lamp started shaking, my bed was shaking, I was thinking, this cannot be thunder, this can't be anything else I don't know what's going on,” said Mary Grace Prinster, Grand Junction resident.

One person told our reporters that her dogs were confused and notified her of the earthquake.

Although it only lasted for a short moment, some people say it's a moment they won't forget.

"I woke up and I thought it might have been a dream but it wasn't a dream,” said Prinster.

"I was asleep and it was kind of a rattle in the house it kind of shook and I went 'what the heck was that,'” said Rose Rauman who was visiting Grand Junction.

Even though the effects of this earthquake were small, it’s always a good idea to check your house over and look at your gas lines. Also check electricals, water pipes and the foundation for any problems.
