Bike tour can't pay up, local groups out thousands of dollars

DELTA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- Several groups on the Western Slope are looking for answers after a bike tour that passed through the area, was unable to pay up.

"It’s hard to believe that people don’t want to live out their obligations," Joseph Vlack, town treasurer for the Town of Palisade, said.

Bicycle Tour of Colorado handed out checks to several local groups after asking them to serve food and house their tour riders, but those checks bounced back -- that's according to the Town of Palisade and the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce.

"It wasn’t until sometime after the bicycle tour had been through that we found out that their checks were no good that they issued to us," Paul Stockwell, executive director for the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce, said.

The Delta Area Chamber of Commerce ambassadors and the Kiwanis Club of Delta are both out $1,300, the Delta High School band is out $1,800 and the town of Palisade more than $1,500.

"If they're going to continue as a bicycle tour, they need to figure out how they're going to pay everybody," Stockwell said.

All of these groups are disappointed, but Delta is especially disappointed for its band.

"We're really concerned about the band," Stockwell said. "They have all the kids that need to go to competitions."

For band students, $1,800 is a big deal -- it would have gone towards getting kids to state at the end of October.

"When you're taken advantage of it kind of makes you be like, I don't want to do this anymore," Ana Jurca, a Delta High School band student, said.

"For them, this really hurt," Jill Jurca, treasurer of the Delta band parent organization, said. "They were really kind of shocked that this would happen."

If you would like to help the Delta High School band, they are taking donations. Those donations can be dropped off at the high school.

Now, these groups looking for answers -- and the Bicycle Tour of Colorado, falling short there too.

"They have not returned any of our phone calls," Vlack said.

To date, they also haven't returned any of our phone calls or emails here at KKCO 11 News. We will update this article if we receive a response from Bicycle Tour Colorado.
