"Tip a Cop" raises money for Special Olympics

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- If you stopped by Olive Garden Sunday, you may have seen local law enforcement officers waiting tables.

Mesa County Sheriff deputies and Colorado State Patrol troopers put on aprons and helped serve customers as part of their Tip a Cop event to help Special Olympics.

Last year Colorado law enforcement raised $1 million to donate to the cause, and they hope to hit that again this year.

The money raised today will go towards things like event costs, sports equipment, and healthcare.

CSP says they hope to help open up new opportunities for the kids.

“A lot of these kids that participate in this, would not get out and be a part of the community, or participate in anything if it wasn’t for Special Olympics. It opened the eyes of a lot of folks and gotten these guys out here to participate in sports that they never thought they could try," said CSP Master Trooper, Chris Wright.

The next Tip a Cop event will be at Texas Roadhouse in early December.
