Rifle wastewater facility processes 3 billion gallons

RIFLE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The Rifle Regional Wastewater Reclamation Facility reached a big milestone this week.

The facility has officially treated 3 billion gallons of water. The water treatment plant has kept three billion gallons of sewage and waste from getting into the Colorado River since 2009, when it opened.

On a daily basis, the plant goes through about 897,000 gallons a day.

"My crew here, they are kind of like the unsung heroes of modern society. Because modern sanitation makes so much possible. It keeps people healthy for much longer than the old days, but it is often overlooked as well,” said Jared Emmert, Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor.

The water treatment facility processes water for about 10,000 customers in the Rifle area.
