D51 school of choice window now open

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The school of choice window is officially open and will run until March 15.

"Most people are going to apply right away,” said Emily Shockley with School District 51.

This 11 day period allows kids to apply to a school outside of their attendance boundaries. This pertains to the 2019/2020 school year.

"It's a first come first serve basis,” said Corey Hafey, Principal at Appleton Elementary School.

School District 51 says some of the most popular schools are Redlands and West Middle School, Palisade High School, Broadway, Scenic, and Appleton elementary schools.

"We got great teachers, we got great staff members and great families,” said Hafey.

All you have to do is head to the District’s website (which is attached to the right of this article) and log in using your ParentVue account. If you are new to the district or don’t have an account you can sign up.

"People who live in our boundaries our Appleton boundaries they get first choice. So, they are automatically into Appleton and then after that is the school of choice process. If during that window they are not accepted they have another alternative which is the transfer request,” said Hafey.

Appleton Elementary used to accept up to 150 choice students. Last year that was down to 60 and this year they'll accept less than 20.

"It has reduced over the last couple of years due to a lot of building that is going on around our area,” said Hafey.

More houses popping up near the school means those students will get automatic acceptance. Therefore lowering the number of outside choice spots.

"Sometimes it's just, you know, that school or you like the size of it or the teachers and you just really want your kids to go there,” said Shockley.

However, not all schools accept choice applications, like Dual Immersion, Independence Academy, R-5, Juniper Ridge, New Emerson, the East’s Challenge program, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Palisade High School.

Principals will notify families of their denial or acceptance on or before April 5. They need to sign and return a letter of commitment by April 30.
