First cousins get married in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A Utah couple came to Mesa County to get married Monday, because it is illegal for them to marry in their home state.

Michael and Angela are first cousins.

"My father is his mother's older brother," said Angela Peang.

They say they've always been in love with each other.

"Immediately there was something very special about Angie and something very special with our bond," said Michael Lee.

The couple had to come to Mesa County to marry because it's legal in Colorado to marry your first cousin. In Utah, first cousins can marry if both are over the age of 65, or if both are over 55 and the courts find that they cannot have kids.

"The fact that 19 other states do legalize, or do allow it, tells me that there might be something a little antiquated, maybe ancient about this. It needs to be reexamined," said Lee.
