Montrose County opposes "Red Flag" bill

MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- Montrose County has joined the list of Western Slope counties against the "Red Flag" Bill, which would allow a judge to take guns from people if they are deemed a risk.

Delta County passed a similar resolution earlier this month, and Mesa County Sheriff Matt Lewis has personally spoken out against the bill.

Mesa County passed something similar back in 2013 in favor of the 2nd amendment.

Commissioners in Montrose say they think mental health and 2nd amendment rights are two separate issues, and need to be addressed individually.

"Who is really diagnosing and who is really identifying these people? So I'm concerned about that. I'm not concerned about the intent of the bill, I think we have to do something in Colorado regarding mental illness, but I think this is the wrong method on which to do that," said Montrose County Commissioner, Sue Hansen.

The Montrose County resolution also highlights the need for more mental health services and facilities funding.
