Girl Scout working to tackle hunger in the Valley

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- A Grand Junction Girl Scout is working to make sure families can make healthy food choices without spending a lot of money.

Kyra TerLouw partnered with the Grand Junction Community Food Bank to give vegetable container gardening kits to those in need. Those kits allow families who are struggling to grow healthy food anywhere.

The kits include everything you need to grow a variety of plants along with nutritional information and a 'how to' brochure. She hopes it will help families with little resources make healthy food choices.

"My goal is that they can teach their children, or neighbors, to grow their own fruits and vegetables in order to inspire them to eat healthier," TerLouw said. "And container gardening is actually kind of a stress reliever, at least to me it is, so have some family fun."

TerLouw is working to get her gold award in the process, it's the highest honor in Girl Scouts.
