GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A memorial service to honor the life of Tilman Bishop took place at CMU, after he passed away the night of June 16th.

Tillie served on the Colorado Mesa University board of trustees, and served on the Colorado state legislature for almost 30 years.

He was hired at CMU back in 1962, when the university was still Mesa Junior College, and spent 31 years at the university.

He also did extensive work with the Grand Junction Lion's Club, raising money to give back to the community. CMU President Tim Foster says Tillie was an example for others to follow.

"A true friend to this university and to this community. It's interesting because you read stories, and you hear stories, and I don't care what story you do or how good you are, you'll leave something out that he did. Whether it was serving on the JUCO board or...he's just done everything," Foster said.

Governor Jared Polis ordered flags stay at half staff until sunset on June 25th.
