PALISADE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- It's almost the sweetest time of the year, the first variety of Palisade peaches expected to hit the stands next week.
The "Rising Star", "Red Haven" and "New Haven" peaches are being harvested now. There are about 30 to 40 different varieties grown in Palisade.
"The peaches we get now, early in the season, are going to be long gone by the time the next phase comes in. So we'll always have different varieties coming in. They're predictable in their timing and they're in sequence to one another. The reason we have so many varieties is just to spread that season out as long as we can," said Charlie Talbott, Talbott Farms.
Peach season may seem late this summer, but it's actually right on schedule. The last few years, peach season started early because of the hot spring temperatures.
The peak of peach season is in August and will end in September.
