D-51 outdoor wilderness program gets expansion

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- More students will be able to explore the outdoors this school semester.

School District 51 is expanding their Outdoor Wilderness Lab or "Owl Program."

Board members announced they'll give $100,000 dollars for the program to add a permanent facility. Colorado Parks and Wildlife will be matching that same amount to help them expand.

"We've had a lot of positive support from community members, saying that this is something that their happy to see the school district going in this direction. They feel like it's good for kids. Anything that gets kids learning outside, it has a lot of positive benefits. So, reactions been really good so far,” says Bookcliff Science Teacher, Greg Weckenbrock.

The program offers sixth-graders the opportunity to learn and explore nature in a camp-like setting during the Spring.
