Montrose business hires special needs employees

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- A new shop in Montrose is offering pizza and ice cream in the same place, but its not just the food that makes it unique.

It's called Buckaroos Slices and Scoops, and they hire people with special needs to give them work experience.

Most of them can only work two or three hour shifts, for a few days a week, and the business is willing to work with them.

The shop opened its doors for the first time Tuesday, October 15th.

"We started today, and I realized that two of our employees have never used a knife before. So there are some basic skills that need to come into play…how to use the cash register, how to make change. A lot of how to talk to customers, and in an appropriate fashion. It runs the gamut, let alone how to make a pizza," said owner, Cindy Lajoy.

As of now, Buckaroos has 10 special needs workers. There will be an official grand opening coming up Friday, October 18th.
