Flu season and holiday travel

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- This flu season is no joke and now is the time to take extra precautions, especially with how many people will be traveling for the holidays.

After Thanksgiving through December is typically when flu season starts to peak.

The flu virus can live on surfaces like door knobs and tables for a long period of time, so hand washing is key to staying healthy.

Try not to touch anyone who is showing any symptoms of the flu either.

Above all, the best way to protect yourself against the flu is to get the vaccination.

"Typically the flu vaccine takes two weeks for full effect, so when you think about timing before traveling before the holiday season, that's right about now," says Andy Tyler, Regional Epidemiologist with Mesa County Public Health. "I certainly recommend getting it before if people haven't already."

The symptoms include coughing, fever and fatigue.
