GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)-- A local couple entered the New Year with a lot to be thankful for, even though they saw their fair share of heartbreak in 2019.
Brent and Morgan Magill are teachers at Pear Park Elementary school. They were just married, bought a new house and were expecting a baby in early 2019.
But the year took a turn when Brent had to undergo a heart transplant.
What started as a promising year took a turn for the worse when Brent found out only 30% of his heart was working.
He was taken to UC Health in Denver where he was put on the transplant list. Though he did get a new heart, he was still facing some issues. The right side had not woken up yet, so then they played a waiting game.
Fortunately, his whole heart started working again.
Brent and his wife were able to return home early November. Shortly after, Morgan gave birth to their son Owen.
Brent is taking a year off from teaching to focus on his health, while Morgan will be returning next month.
All while the Magills were over in Denver, their friends, family and coworkers helped the family by doing yard work, painting the upstairs of their new house and even raised money to help with the medical expenses.
