GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO)- UPDATE: The District Attorney declines charges against Grand Junction Police Department Officer Zach Diaz, who shot Victor Jackson.
During the incident Jackson was in the bathroom for several hours, and had not left.
The clerk called police and expressed his concern.
Two officers were present during the incident, and while having contact with the individual an officer involved shooting occurred.
PRIOR UPDATE: The Grand Junction Police Department has identified the officer who discharged his weapon in the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, February 2, 2020.
The individual involved was Officer Zach Diaz, whom is a patrol officer who started with our agency in 2017.
As is standard protocol with any officer involved shooting, Officer Diaz is currently on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an internal investigation, which takes place separately from the criminal investigation being conducted by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
This incident remains under investigation by CIRT.
According to the Critical Response Team, Grand Junction Police Department earlier on Feb.2, 2020, at 2:30 A.M., were asked for the help of the removal of an adult individual from the Maverik gas station at 2902 D road.
During the contact with the individual an officer involved shooting occurred. The involved individual was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
None of the involved law enforcement officers were injured.
There will be increased activity in the area of 29 Road and D Road as law enforcement continues to investigate this incident.
