AURORA, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) - The Federal Bureau of Prisons early Thursday morning confirmed the Aurora theater gunman has been moved to a federal prison in central Pennsylvania.

According to the bureau's website, James Holmes was moved to a prison in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, a facility that houses more than 800 male inmates.

Holmes had been moved after he was attacked inside the state prison.

The Colorado Department of Corrections confirmed Wednesday night that Aurora theater gunman James Holmes had been transferred, but they didn't immediately say where.

A spokesman said that the state wanted to place Homes in the federal system several months ago, but space didn't become available until recently at the facility in Pennsylvania.

Prior to the announcement of his new location, the Colorado Department of Corrections told Colorado Springs sister station KKTV that they didn't have to say where Holmes was because of the Interstate Corrections Compact, where states can trade certain prisoners because of safety concerns or other reasons.

Twelve people were killed and 70 others were hurt when Holmes opened fire at the Century 16 theater in Aurora in 2012. He was sentenced to life in prison 2015.
