GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- One person was killed in a crash in the Grand Valley early Wednesday morning.

It happened just after midnight on Broadway, just west of Redlands Parkway.

According to the Grand Junction Police Department, a car crashed into several powerlines and caught on fire. The driver was not able to get out of the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were many homes in the area without power and crews are working to place the downed utility poles.

Broadway was closed between Redlands Parkway and Reed Mesa Drive. Police expected the closure to last for most of Wednesday.

Broadway Elementary School and Redlands Middle School do have power and will be open at their regular times today. Bus pickup times will also be the same. There are alternate routes in place for parents who are dropping off children.

To get to Redlands Middle School, take Redlands Parkway to South Camp, South Camp to 20 1/2 Road, and 20 1/2 Road to Broadway.

For Broadway Elementary School, take Redlands Parkway to Greenbelt and then Greenbelt to 22 ½ Road.

We are staying in touch with police and will let you know as soon as the road is back open.
