MCSO: Charges possible in out of control burn in Whitewater

Firefighters worked to control a brush fire along Highway 50 for hours on Thursday afternoon.

The fire started just after 3 p.m. along Highway 50 and Bean Ranch Road in Whitewater.

The flames were very close to traffic along the busy roadway.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office said the fire was an illegal burn, because the home owners didn't have a permit.

The fire got out of control and crossed over into neighboring property, which is why Mesa county Sheriff's Office investigating for possible arson charges.

About 10 acres were burned.

The sheriff's office reminds the public to always have a permit, even when burning agriculturally.

The fire remains under investigation.
