Man missing after running from traffic stop; jumped into canal

PALISADE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- A man is still missing after he allegedly fled on foot from a traffic stop on I-70 and jumped into a nearby canal.

Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Tpr. Dan Chermoksaid troopers pulled over a white Honda Accord with California plates around exit 42 on I-70 near Palisade Tuesday night. It happened at about 5:45 p.m. A female driver and male passenger were removed from the car during a probable cause search of the contents of their vehicle.

Chermok said that during the search, the man fled on foot. Troopers watched him enter the Highline Canal near Stubb Ditch Road and swimming with difficulty. Moments later he went under the water and never resurfaced.

Search and recovery efforts are continuing at this time. Chermok said contraband was recovered during the search and the female driver was taken into custody.
