RIFLE, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- You might not always like the cops, but most people love seeing their police dogs. If you're not on the wrong side of them that is.
When these heroic K-9’s retire it can be "ruff going". That's why they're hosting a fundraiser to help keep these furry veterans happy and healthy into retirement.
“When police dogs retire people don't realize that the handler takes on all expenses. The police departments retire them, they are retired for medical reasons generally and so their payment stops, so we have to pay everything,” said Geraldine Earthman, retired GJPD K-9 handler and secretary of the Colorado Police K-9 Association.
The Colorado Police K-9 Challenge will be on September 21st at the Garfield County Fairgrounds which is on 1000 Railroad Avenue in Rifle. It will be at 10am to 2pm.
“This is about showing off your partner and having a good time,” said Garrett Duncan, Corporal and K-9 handler with the Rifle Police Department.
It’s free and open to the public. Almost all law enforcement agencies from across the state will be there.
"I was a dog handler for 27 years before I retired… some that I have had were very happy to be at home because they knew that they have worn their bodies out and then a couple that I had did not do retirement well, when I would leave with the other one they would cry they would run to the door they just wouldn't settle for the whole time I was gone,” said Earthman.
There’s going to be an agility competition, strongest bite test, narcotics detection, and much more.
Donations are welcome. They will be selling raffle tickets for your chance to win Denver Bronco’s tickets, food and a ton more.
