GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO News)-- Right here in valley we saw some unusual snow fall earlier in the week. Up at Powderhorn they are seeing snow like never before during this time of year.
“We’re pretty excited to go from mountain biking and to have this kind of base getting built up,” says Powderhorn staff member, Joe Shero.
The ski resort saw two feet of snow in October and 16 inches in just the last week.
“Usually it doesn’t really start until December sometimes,” says Shero.
Chilly air and moisture content has allowed them to start snow-making earlier than they ever have before, according to staff.
“There’s got to be the right amount of humidity in the air and it’s got to stay cold enough for long enough for those guys to get it going,” says Shero.
They’ve even been blowing snow for the past four nights.
“Really just kind of helps build up the base and get the ground work started for everything that’s going to come from Mother Nature,” says Shero.
Mowing and brush cutting that will make for less snow when they open for the season.
“That means you need less snow to make it that much deeper and ready to ride,”
No opening date has been completely set in stone, although they're shooting for December 13th.
“Probably one more storm and we’ll start seeing people skin up and getting ready to go,” says Shero.
