The lightning-caused East Canyon Fire burning near Mancos, Colorado is now 79% contained and burning 2,905 acres.

While the fire made significant initial gains on June 15, the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team (RMIM) says that the fire's behavior has been more moderate since.

Lighter winds last Thursday allowed firefighters to make good progress in securing firelines says the RMIM.

On June 15, the fire's growth forced Highway 160 between Cortez and Durango to shut down. However, the highway has since been reopened by Colorado State Patrol.

On June 16, another fire sparked between Durango and Aztec, New Mexico, which caused some resources to leave the East Canyon Fire and head to the "Six Shooter Fire."

The Six Shooter Fire has since been contained according to officials.

Smoke from these two fires, along with other wildfires burning in Arizona, has made its way into parts of the valley.
