Former deputy charged with sex crime, giving alcohol to minor

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- The Mesa County District Attorney says a former sheriff’s deputy has been charged with a sex crime and giving alcohol to a minor.

An affidavit alleges Salmineo Espindola invited a former Central High School student to his home, gave her alcohol and made unwanted sexual advances. He was charged Monday with unlawful sexual contact, providing alcohol to a minor and first-degree official misconduct.

The affidavit from the district attorney’s office says that Espindola “subjected the victim to unwanted fondling and kissing of her breasts”, describing the unlawful sexual contact charge.

Espindola reportedly met the girl when he was a resource officer at the school.

The charges stem from alleged incidents that we're told happened in August of 2018, when the girl was 19 years old. KKCO 11 News has learned that Espindola was forced to resign just over a week ago, on April 19.

He had been a deputy at the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office since 2012. These are misdemeanor charges he is facing, and he’s due in court at the end of next month.
