Fruita elementary schools boundary discussions
Monday night, parents got a first look at where Fruita area students could be going to school in the fall. The school board presented what zoning changes could look like.
“K Road is a very busy street, so we’ve gotten some pleasant nods from the public works department and the police department regarding our decision to use that as a divider,” says D51 demographer, Shannon Bingham.
This first scenario shows Monument Ridge boundaries in pink, Rim Rock in orange, Shelledy in blue, Loma in yellow and Appleton in green.
“Rim Rock is very straight forward. We’re more or less just cutting it cleanly in half and that seems to make sense to a lot of people,” says Bingham, “Loma will be losing the south Fruita students. Shelledy will be picking up the south Fruita students, so that will be a change for Shelledy,”
The second scenario only shows a slight difference with a chunk of Shelledy zoning under Monument Ridge.
“Scenario 2 takes a ten student strip that’s a mile wide between 17 and 17 ½ Road right at the northern edge of the Fruita town limit and it goes all the way to the Bookcliffes and we’ve explored moving that into Monument Ridge just because there is room there,” says Bingham.
Bingham explains that the four schools affected will see changes at an even level.
“Folks that I’ve spoken to have been very pleased with what they have seen, they understand we are activating a new elementary school,” says Bingham.
Bingham says these scenarios do not impact Appleton or any of the Redlands schools.
If you missed Monday’s sessions there will be two more opportunities happening this Thursday Feb. 13 at Fruita Monument High. The first one will be at 4:30 and the other at 6:30.
