GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT)-- A local organization that works to give back to the community honored one of its top members Tuesday.
The Grand Junction Lions Club picked its Lion of the Year, Jim Spehar. He has been with the club for more than 30 years. He says he was surprised and honored to be chosen.
"What this club epitomizes is what I learned around the dinner table in a big, expanded family, is that we are all in this together and we need to take care of one other," Jim Spehar, Lion of the Year said.
The celebration started with a moment of silence to honor a long time member of the organization who recently died. Tilman Bishop, known as Tillie, died on Sunday at the age of 86.
Organizers say his passing has certainly left a void.
"He really gave back to his community. He was the spirit of a lot of what we try to do in this club. He is going to be greatly missed and we have certainly felt the loss deeply with the loss of Tilly," Brad McCloud, GJ Lions Club said.
During his time with the Lions Club, Bishop was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, which is the highest honor a Lion's Club member can get.
