Girls youth basketball season starts Oct. 19
Athletes are gearing up for another season of girls youth basketball.
Youth basketball is offered every fall for girls in 2nd through 6th grade. Grand Junction Parks & Rec partners up with Fruita to widen the program so that more teams can play against each other. According to a poll from the National Alliance for Youth Sports, around 70% of children in the United States are leaving sports by their 13th birthday.
"The skills that you learn on the court can also be applied in life. So we don't want everything centered around winning; we want it around the sportsmanship and the teams that you build and the relationships that you have on and off the courts," says Callie Berkson with GJ Parks & Rec.
With a few weeks of registration left, about 385 players are expected to be on the courts so far.The season runs through the end of December.
