GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) Colorado Governor Jared Polis has signed a major bill into law regarding oil and gas production.
It’s a topic that is causing controversy in the state.
The law will overhaul oil and gas regulations.
The fast-growing population of the state is pushing some communities closer to oil and gas areas, which has caused complaints about noise, pollution and safety.
Governor Polis signed the bill Tuesday afternoon.
Supporters of the new law say it will protect the people in Colorado and the environment.
Those against the law say it will kill jobs and possibly even the industry.
We’re told many are already trying to overturn it.
Colorado ranks fifth in the nation when it comes to drilling for crude oil and sixth for natural gas.
The oil and gas industry in Colorado contributes $32 billion every year to the state economy and reportedly supports 89,000 jobs.
