Keeping kids safe at the pool

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO/KJCT) -- Many of your kids are out of school now and have found their way to a pool. So let's talk safety.

Lifeguards over at Lincoln Park say parents should keep beginning swimmers at arms reach and use a certified life jacket.

The American Red Cross warns parents to never leave children unattended near water and to keep a constant watch on beginning swimmers.

"The number one thing guards go in for is kids that are struggling at the surface. And that's what we try to do, is recognize kids that are struggling at the surface and get to them before it becomes any worse of a situation," said City of Grand Junction Recreation Coordinator, Tricia Rothwell.

Swim lessons are offered at both the Lincoln Park and Orchard Mesa pools. Free swim days for kids are on Wednesdays.
