Two people were arrested for theft from auto after the Mesa County Sheriff's Office setup up a bait operation on Friday, February 7.

Around 2:30 p.m. deputies were alerted an item was stolen from a vehicle that had been baited, according to the MCSO. Deputies tracked the item down to a house on the 500 block of Sara Lane.

24-year-old Shawn Sutherland of Clifton and 38-year-old Michael Simpson of Clifton were arrested in the incident.

Sutherland faces charges of Tampering with Physical Evidence, First Degree Criminal Trespass of Auto, and Theft of $50-$300. Simpson is being charged with Tampering with Physical Evidence.

The MCSO explains that they utilize auto-theft bait operations as a proactive investigative tool to reduce property crime, and are set up in areas where on-going criminal activity has been reported.

"Remember, the best prevention of theft is to lock your car and remove all valuables," states the MCSO.
